Die Zähmung des roten Planeten hat begonnen. Mächtige Konzerne wetteifern darum, den Mars in eine lebensfreundliche Welt zu verwandeln. Mit modernster Technologie werden Temperatur erhöht, Sauerstoff erzeugt und Ozeane erschaffen, um die Voraussetzungen für menschliches Leben zu schaffen.
In Terraforming Mars übernimmt jede Spielerin und jeder Spieler die Kontrolle über einen Konzern. Durch das Kaufen und Ausspielen von Projektkarten werden Produktionsketten aufgebaut, neue Technologien entwickelt und der Terraforming Prozess aktiv vorangetrieben. Jede Entscheidung beeinflusst sowohl den eigenen Fortschritt als auch die Entwicklung des gesamten Planeten.
Zentrale Spielmechanik ist der Terraformwert. Jedes Erhöhen eines globalen Parameters wie Temperatur, Sauerstoffgehalt oder Ozeanbedeckung steigert diesen Wert. Er bestimmt Einkommen und bildet die Grundlage für die Endwertung. Zusätzlich werden Siegpunkte durch Städtebau, Grünflächen, Infrastruktur und viele Kartenfähigkeiten erzielt.
Das Spiel verläuft über mehrere Generationen. Jede Generation besteht aus Forschungsphase, Aktionsphase und Produktionsphase. In der Aktionsphase führen die Spielenden abwechselnd Aktionen aus, bis alle gepasst haben. Danach werden Ressourcen produziert und Einkommen ausgezahlt.
Das Spiel endet, sobald alle globalen Parameter ihr Ziel erreicht haben. Anschliessend erfolgt die Schlusswertung. Gewonnen hat der Konzern mit den meisten Siegpunkten.
Terraforming Mars bietet hohe strategische Tiefe, starke Verzahnung von Karten und Spielplan sowie einen enormen Wiederspielwert. Ein anspruchsvolles Kennerspiel für Fans von Engine Building und langfristiger Planung.
